Born on October 11, 1919, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Art Blakey was an American jazz drummer and bandleader known for his work in bebop, hard bop, and afro-cuban jazz. His career spanned several decades, during which he became closely associated with some of jazz’s most influential movements and artists.
Often described as fiery and steeped in the acoustic small-group tradition of Blue Note’s hard bop scene, Blakey’s sound was both powerful and deeply rooted in jazz’s evolving rhythms and textures. He was also known by the name Abdullah Ibn Buhaina after his conversion to Islam in the late 1940s.
In the mid-1950s, Blakey co-founded The Jazz Messengers, a band that became a vital platform for fostering young jazz talent over its 35-year run under his leadership. His collaborations included legendary figures like Miles Davis, and he was connected to icons such as Lee Morgan, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Wayne Shorter.
