Known as the "Empress of the Blues," she was the most celebrated female blues artist of the 1930s, showcasing her powerful contralto voice through over 160 recordings for Columbia Records, beginning her career in 1923. Some of her most notable songs include "Downhearted Blues" and "Gimme a Pigfoot," which reflect themes of independence and sexual freedom that resonate throughout her work. Her contributions to music were recognized with her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. Tragically, her life and career were cut short when she died in a car crash at the age of 45. Despite her early passing, Bessie Smith's legacy endures, influencing countless artists and continuing to shape the blues genre.
