Billy Taylor was a renowned jazz pianist, composer, broadcaster, and educator, born on July 24, 1921, in Greenville, North Carolina. Throughout his illustrious career, he composed over 300 songs, with notable pieces such as "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free" and "Take the 'A' Train." Taylor was recognized for his contributions to music and education, serving as the Robert L. Jones Distinguished Professor of Music at East Carolina University and as the artistic director for jazz at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts starting in 1994. In addition to his musical accomplishments, Taylor was a dedicated jazz activist, co-founding The Jazz Foundation of America in 1989. His talents earned him numerous accolades, including a Grammy Award and an Emmy Award. In recognition of his influence and contributions to the music scene, he was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2010.
