William Dale Fries Jr., known as C.W. McCall, was a talented American commercial artist and musician who gained fame for his unique blend of storytelling and music. He created the character C.W. McCall for a series of popular bread commercials, which ultimately paved the way for his musical career. His biggest hit, "Convoy," topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1976, becoming a classic anthem of trucker culture. Fries collaborated with Chip Davis, who would later establish Mannheim Steamroller, showcasing his versatility in both advertising and music. Beyond his artistic pursuits, Fries served as the mayor of Ouray, Colorado, from 1986 to 1992, reflecting his commitment to his community. Although he stepped back from the music scene in 1979, he revisited recording later in life. Fries was recognized for his innovative advertising work, receiving several Clio Awards throughout his career. He passed away on April 1, 2022, at the age of 93, leaving behind a legacy marked by memorable songs like "Wolf Creek Pass" and "Old Home Filler-Up an' Keep on a-Truckin' Cafe."
