In the 1950s, he led a unique quintet that featured the cello prominently, showcasing his innovative approach to music. His style spanned across cool jazz, post bop, and jazz fusion, with notable tracks such as "Conquistadors" and "For Mods Only" highlighting his creative contributions. Hamilton's influence on jazz was acknowledged when he received the NEA Jazz Master Fellowship in 2004. Additionally, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from The New School in 2007, reflecting his impact on the art form. He continued to inspire many until his passing on November 25, 2013, at the age of 92.
