Why it matters
Dementia Precox refers to an outdated psychiatric diagnosis that was initially used to describe a chronic and deteriorating psychotic disorder. The term made its debut in 1880 thanks to German psychiatrist Heinrich Schüle, but it gained wider recognition through Emil Kraepelin's influential textbook descriptions.
