Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson was a prominent figure in the American music scene, known for his work as a jump blues, jazz, bebop, and R&B alto saxophonist, as well as a blues shouter. Born Edward L. Vinson Jr. on December 18, 1917, in Houston, Texas, he earned the nickname "Cleanhead" due to an incident involving a hair-straightening product. His career began in the 1930s with Milton Larkin's orchestra, and he collaborated with notable musicians such as Tom Archia, Big Bill Broonzy, and the Cootie Williams Orchestra. Vinson is perhaps best remembered for his song "Cherry Red," which showcases his distinctive vocal style. Music critic Robert Christgau praised him for having "one of the cleanest, and nastiest, blues voices you'll ever hear." His life came to an end on July 2, 1988, when he suffered a heart attack while undergoing chemotherapy in Los Angeles, California.
