New wave music
General Public emerged from Birmingham in 1983, founded by vocalists Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger, who previously gained fame with the Beat. The lineup also featured former members from notable bands like Dexys Midnight Runners, the Specials, and the Clash. Their inaugural album, "All the Rage," hit the shelves in 1984, showcasing their new wave sound. They are particularly recognized for their popular tracks, including "Tenderness," which was released in the same year, and "I'll Take You There," a notable hit from 1994. In addition to their successes, General Public had a minor hit with the self-titled track, which peaked at No. 60 on the UK singles chart. The band reunited in 1994 to record a cover of "I'll Take You There" for the soundtrack of the film "Threesome." Sadly, Ranking Roger passed away on March 26, 2019, leaving behind a legacy that includes memorable songs and influential contributions to the music scene.
