Herbie Mann, born Herbert Jay Solomon on April 16, 1930, in Brooklyn, New York, was a pioneering jazz flute player whose influence extended into world music. He gained prominence for his innovative approach to the flute within jazz, being among the first musicians to embrace this instrument in the genre. His 1959 album "Flautista!" showcased his talent in Afro-Cuban jazz, laying the groundwork for his future explorations. Mann achieved commercial success with the 1975 hit "Hi-Jack," which topped the Billboard dance charts, further solidifying his place in music history. In the early 1970s, he founded Embryo Records, allowing him greater creative control over his work. Mann's legacy continued until his passing from prostate cancer on July 1, 2003, leaving behind a rich catalogue that includes notable songs like "Memphis Underground" and "One Note Samba/Surfboard."
