Joseph Lee Williams, known as JD Short or Big Joe Williams, was a prominent figure in the Delta blues scene. Born on October 16, 1903, he became renowned for his distinctive nine-string guitar sound, which set him apart from his contemporaries. Over his career, he recorded for several labels, including the notable Bluebird Records, and produced classic tracks like "Baby, Please Don't Go," "Crawlin' King Snake," and "Peach Orchard Mama." His musical talents earned him a place in the Blues Hall of Fame in 1992, highlighting his influence on the genre. In addition to his recordings, Williams had a significant impact on the music world, inspiring artists such as Bob Dylan. The two collaborated on several duets in 1962, showcasing Williams's unique style that combined driving rhythms with virtuosic lead lines. He also toured Europe and Japan in the late 1960s and early 1970s, bringing his blues sound to international audiences. Williams passed away on December 17, 1982, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the blues community.
