Joe Ely, born Earle Rewell Ely on February 9, 1947, in Amarillo, Texas, was a prominent figure in the progressive country movement that flourished in Austin during the 1970s and 1980s. He co-founded the influential band The Flatlanders in 1971 alongside Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock, carving out a unique sound that blended country with rock and folk influences. Ely launched his solo career with his debut album in 1977 and quickly gained recognition for songs like "If Music Could Talk." Throughout his career, Ely shared stages with iconic acts such as Bruce Springsteen, The Kinks, and The Rolling Stones, showcasing his talent to a wider audience. His contributions to music were celebrated when he was inducted into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame in October 2022. Ely passed away on December 15, 2025, at the age of 78, leaving behind a rich legacy in the American music scene.
