John McLaughlin, born on January 4, 1942, is an influential English guitarist and composer celebrated for his role in pioneering jazz fusion. He released his debut album as a bandleader, Extrapolation, in 1969, marking the beginning of a remarkable career. Collaborating with Miles Davis during the late 1960s to early 1970s, McLaughlin contributed to several groundbreaking electric jazz fusion albums. He later founded the Mahavishnu Orchestra, a group renowned for its intricate fusion of jazz and rock. In addition to his work with orchestras, McLaughlin was instrumental in forming the Indian-Jazz rock fusion band Shakti in 1974. His artistry has earned him accolades, including a Grammy Award for Best Improvised Jazz Solo in 2018 for his performance on "Miles Beyond." Recognized by many as one of the greatest guitarists ever, his notable songs also include "Binky's Beam" and "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat."
