John Sebastian, born on March 17, 1944, is a prominent American singer, songwriter, and musician known for his influential work in the rock genre. He gained fame as the founder of the Lovin' Spoonful in 1964, where he penned and performed hits like "Do You Believe in Magic" and "Summer in the City." After leaving the band following their 1968 album, Everything Playing, he embarked on a successful solo career, highlighted by his 1976 U.S. No. 1 hit "Welcome Back," which served as the theme for the sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter. Sebastian's contributions extend beyond his own music; he made a memorable appearance at the Woodstock festival in 1969 and has collaborated with various artists throughout his career, including providing harmonica on tracks with the Doors. His impact on music was recognized in 2000 when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Lovin' Spoonful.
