Mario Lanza

Mario Lanza

Mario Lanza, originally named Alfredo Arnold Cocozza, was an accomplished American tenor and actor born on January 31, 1921. He gained fame as a Hollywood film star during the late 1940s and 1950s, captivating audiences with his powerful voice and charismatic performances. Lanza began his journey in music at the young age of 16, honing his skills to become a professional singer. His career took a significant leap when he signed a seven-year contract with MGM after an impressive performance at the Hollywood Bowl in 1947. Lanza made his film debut in "That Midnight Kiss" in 1949 and went on to portray the legendary tenor Enrico Caruso in the biopic "The Great Caruso" in 1951. He is best remembered for his hit songs such as "Be My Love," "The Loveliest Night of the Year," and "Because You're Mine," the latter being his final million-selling hit released in 1952. Tragically, Lanza's life was cut short when he died from an apparent pulmonary embolism at the age of 38 on October 7, 1959.
