The Modern Lovers emerged from Natick, Massachusetts in 1970, founded by Jonathan Richman. Although they were active until 1974, their influential recordings didn't see the light of day until 1976. Their self-titled debut album features themes of dating awkwardness and adolescence in Massachusetts, showcasing their unique sound that would come to be associated with proto-punk. The original lineup comprised Richman, Ernie Brooks, David Robinson, and Jerry Harrison, and they left a lasting impact on various musical genres, including punk rock and new wave. Among their notable tracks are “Roadrunner,” “Pablo Picasso,” and “She Cracked,” all of which highlight their innovative approach to songwriting. After their initial run, Richman continued to use the name Modern Lovers for different backing bands until 1988, further solidifying their legacy in the music world. The band's work remains a testament to their influence on the evolution of alternative and indie rock styles.
