Ray Barretto was a prominent American percussionist and bandleader, known for his roots in Puerto Rico. Born on April 29, 1929, in Brooklyn, New York, he gained recognition in the 1960s with his hit "El Watusi," recorded by his band Charanga Moderna. As a key figure in the boogaloo and salsa movements, Barretto's contributions to Latin music were significant, especially as a long-time member of the influential Fania All-Stars. In 1990, he was honored with a Grammy Award for his album "Ritmo en el corazón," further cementing his legacy in the music industry. In the later years of his career, he formed the New World Spirit jazz ensemble, showcasing his versatility as an artist. Ray Barretto passed away on February 17, 2006, leaving behind a rich musical heritage that continues to inspire.
