Roy Ayers, born on September 10, 1940, in Los Angeles, California, was an influential vibraphonist, record producer, and composer. He began his musical journey in the post-bop jazz scene and became a key figure in jazz-funk, as well as the acid jazz movement. Known as "The Godfather of Neo Soul," Ayers made a significant impact on the genre through his innovative sound. In the early 1970s, he established his own band, Roy Ayers Ubiquity, which became renowned for its infectious grooves. Among his notable songs, "Everybody Loves the Sunshine" stands out as a timeless classic, alongside hits like "Running Away" and "Freaky Deaky." Over his career, Ayers collaborated with prominent artists such as Fela Kuti and Rick James, further solidifying his legacy in the music world. He passed away on March 4, 2025, at the age of 84, leaving behind a rich musical heritage that continues to inspire.
