Sam "The Man" Taylor, born Samuel Leroy Taylor, Jr. on July 12, 1916, in Lexington, Tennessee, was a prominent American tenor saxophonist known for his contributions to jazz, rhythm and blues, and blues. He honed his skills at Alabama State University and gained early experience playing with the Bama State Collegians. Over his career, he collaborated with iconic artists such as Ray Charles, Cab Calloway, and Louis Jordan, becoming a sought-after session musician in New York during the 1950s. Taylor is perhaps best remembered for his memorable saxophone solo on Big Joe Turner's classic hit "Shake, Rattle and Roll." In the 1960s, he led a five-piece band called the Blues Chasers and continued to have a vibrant career, frequently performing and recording in Japan throughout the 1970s. He passed away on October 5, 1990, in Atlanta, Georgia, leaving behind a legacy marked by his distinct sound and influential collaborations.
