Sister Rosetta Tharpe, born Rosetta Nubin on March 20, 1915, in Cotton Plant, Arkansas, was an influential American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. She rose to fame in the 1930s and 1940s, captivating audiences with her unique blend of gospel music and electric guitar. Known for her pioneering use of heavy distortion, Tharpe's sound laid the groundwork for what would eventually evolve into rock and roll. Her hit song "Strange Things Happening Every Day" made history as the first gospel record to reach the Billboard R&B chart. Revered as "the original soul sister" and "the Godmother of rock and roll," Tharpe's impact on music continues to be celebrated. She released several notable tracks, including "Rock Me," "This Train," and "Gospel Train."
