Born on September 6, 1947, in Los Angeles, CA, Sylvester carved out a unique niche in dance music with a style often described as a blend of disco, funk, hi-NRG, and post-disco. His 1977 self-titled album marked a significant entry into the scene, showcasing his ability to energize club floors with infectious beats and soulful vocals.
Sylvester's music invites focused listening, often revealing textures that feel intimate and acoustic despite the dancefloor-ready energy. This contrast adds depth to his work, making it rewarding beyond the typical club context.
His sound is often compared to Donna Summer, reflecting a shared command of disco's emotional and rhythmic power. Moreover, Sylvester's artistic roots are influenced by legends like Little Richard, Aretha Franklin, Bessie Smith, and Billie Holiday, the latter two bringing a rich legacy of soul and blues to his musical foundation. Notably, he also collaborated with Aretha Franklin, linking his work directly with one of soul music's greatest voices.
