Established in 1953, the group comprised three Australians and one American musician, showcasing a unique blend of instruments, including bassoon, flute, and vibraphone alongside traditional jazz components. They recorded seven albums for the Bethlehem label between 1955 and 1958, with popular tracks such as "Jazz in D Minor" and "Three Penny Opera" highlighting their innovative style. The quartet gained recognition by collaborating with influential artists like Dave Brubeck and Gerry Mulligan, and they performed at prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York. In 1958, they toured Australia for The Australian Concert Tour, further solidifying their presence in the jazz scene. The group reunited for special concerts in Adelaide in both 1986 and 1993, reminding fans of their lasting impact on the music world.
