The Dells originated as an American R&B vocal group in 1953, featuring founding members Marvin Junior, Verne Allison, Johnny Funches, Chuck Barksdale, and the McGill brothers, Michael and Lucius. They made their mark with their first hit, "Oh What a Night," in 1956, and became known for their impressive vocal harmonies and emotional ballads. Following a brief disbandment due to a tragic car crash in 1958, they reunited in 1960 with Johnny Carter stepping in for Funches. Over the years, The Dells achieved remarkable success, becoming the first group to secure a top 40 R&B hit across five consecutive decades. Their contributions to music earned them induction into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004. The group continued to perform until 2012, with their final concert taking place at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum. Although several members have passed away, their legacy endures through timeless songs like "Stay in My Corner" and "The Love We Had Stays on My Mind."
