The Soul Stirrers, an influential American gospel music group, have left an indelible mark on the genre over their impressive 90-year career. Formed in 1926 in Trinity, Texas, they played a pivotal role in shaping the quartet style of gospel music, significantly impacting the development of soul, R&B, doo-wop, and Southern soul. Under the musical direction of R.H. Harris, the group produced memorable songs such as "By and By," "In That Awful Hour," and "Jesus Gave Me Water." Sam Cooke, who served as the lead vocalist from 1950 to 1956, brought a unique flair that further elevated their sound. The Soul Stirrers were honored with induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, recognizing their profound influence on music.
