Wendy Carlos, born on November 14, 1939, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, is a pioneering American musician and composer celebrated for her contributions to electronic music and film scores. She studied physics and music at Brown University and further advanced her music composition skills at Columbia University. Carlos played a crucial role in the development of the Moog synthesizer, which was one of the first commercially available keyboard instruments. Her 1968 album, Switched-On Bach, brought her widespread recognition and earned her three Grammy Awards. Beyond her original compositions, Carlos is known for scoring iconic films directed by Stanley Kubrick, including A Clockwork Orange and The Shining, as well as the sci-fi classic Tron. In 1979, she made headlines by disclosing her gender identity, significantly raising awareness of transgender issues. Although much of her discography remains out of print and unavailable for digital distribution, her influence on music and culture endures.
