Xavier Cugat, born on January 1, 1900, in Girona, Spain, made a significant impact on the American music scene by popularizing Latin music. Emigrating to Cuba at a young age, he eventually led the resident orchestra at the renowned Waldorf–Astoria hotel from 1933 to 1949, earning the title of the 'Rumba King.' Over his 40-year career, Cugat recorded numerous hits, including beloved songs like "Perfidia," "Brazil," and "The Peanut Vendor." His influence extended beyond music as he appeared in several films during the 1930s and 1940s, such as "You Were Never Lovelier" and "Neptune's Daughter." In addition to his music and film career, Cugat owned Casa Cugat, a popular restaurant in West Hollywood that attracted many Hollywood stars. He was married four times, with notable spouses including singer Abbe Lane and actress Charo. His legacy was further cemented when he was posthumously inducted into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame in 2001, recognizing his contributions to the genre and culture.
