Donald Byrd’s Fancy Free catches the trumpeter at a transitional Blue Note moment, recorded and released in 1969 as he began bringing electric color into his jazz language. The date uses a large ensemble, including Frank Foster on tenor saxophone, Lew Tabackin or Jerry Dodgion on flute, and Duke Pearson on electric piano; it also marks Byrd’s first use of electric piano on one of his albums.
