Donald Byrd – Fancy Free

Donald Byrd’s Fancy Free catches the trumpeter at a transitional Blue Note moment, recorded and released in 1969 as he began bringing electric color into his jazz language. The date uses a large ensemble, including Frank Foster on tenor saxophone, Lew Tabackin or Jerry Dodgion on flute, and Duke Pearson on electric piano; it also marks Byrd’s first use of electric piano on one of his albums. That experimental edge gives the record a different pull from Byrd’s earlier bop-rooted work, leaning into the soul-jazz direction that would become a bigger part of his story. This copy is a 1969 Blue Note vinyl pressing priced at $60. The record is graded VG+, a solid everyday listening grade with a few light lines, sleeve marks, or small scuffs expected, but not wear that should dominate the music. The appeal here is a same-year Blue Note copy of one of Byrd’s more exploratory late-’60s albums.
