Breakaway brings together Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge for their second duet album, capturing an intimate acoustic small-group sound that invites focused listening. Recorded at Sunset Sound Studios and produced by Fred Foster, who also worked on their previous collaboration, the album blends originals and covers with warmth and subtlety. Notably, "Lover Please" earned them the 1975 Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group, standing out amid thoughtful interpretations of songs like "Sweet Susannah" and "The Things I Might Have Been." It's a collection where the voices converse as much as they sing, making it a rewarding listen for those who appreciate delicate storytelling through song. This 1974 vinyl pressing on Monument Records offers a solid example of the album’s original era presentation. The record grades at VG+, meaning it carries the typical light surface marks and paper scuffs you’d expect from a well-cared-for player, but nothing that should interfere with the gentle dynamics of the music. The 12-inch format fits neatly into any collection, and it’s one of those records whose title might suggest breaking away from noise—but here, it’s all about leaning in close. Kris & Rita.
