Songs of Leonard Cohen marks the debut of a songwriter whose poetic depth and understated delivery set a new tone for folk music in the late 1960s. With John Simon conducting and producing, the album unfolds through intimate, acoustic arrangements that invite close listening to tracks like "Suzanne" and "So Long, Marianne." Cohen’s voice, a blend of spoken word and melody, brings out the bittersweet storytelling found in "The Stranger Song" and "One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong," making this a record that rewards patience and attention. This 1968 pressing offers a vintage window into that initial wave of Cohen’s recorded work on Columbia, housed on vinyl that shows moderate wear consistent with its age but remains fully playable. Given the focused listening style and small ensemble backing, the record’s condition might reveal some background noise yet retains the core of its delicate sound. If you’re assembling a collection that appreciates the craft of songwriting as a form of quiet revelation, this edition of Songs of Leonard Cohen fits neatly and thoughtfully on the shelf—no need to rush past it.
