Rick James’ Bustin' Out Of L Seven marks a bold entry in his catalog, blending focused listening with intimate acoustic moments that reveal his knack for layered grooves and soulful storytelling. Tracks like "Bustin' Out" and the multi-part "High On Your Love Suite / One Mo Hit" showcase his flair for combining funk rhythms with a compact ensemble feel, offering a sound that fans of Prince might find intriguingly adjacent. This album captures a distinct phase in James’ career, where his charisma meets a more nuanced, small ensemble approach. This 1979 vinyl pressing stands up well for everyday play, graded VG+ with only minor surface marks unlikely to distract from the music’s groove. It’s a solid, tactile reminder that Rick James wasn’t just about high-energy funk—he also knew how to draw you into a detailed, soulful listen. For anyone curious about his work beyond the hits, this record holds a spot where dance-floor charisma and acoustic subtlety meet, making it a thoughtful addition to a funk or focused listening collection.
