Roberta Flack’s First Take is a quietly commanding collection that introduced her soulful blend of jazz, folk, and gospel to the world. Tracks like "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and "Compared to What" showcase her ability to inhabit a song with a delicate yet arresting presence, setting her apart from the singer-songwriter crowd with a pianist’s sensitivity. The album’s mood is intimate but never fragile, making it a compelling listen for those drawn to thoughtful, nuanced vocal performances. This 1969 Club Edition pressing captures that early artistry in stereo, offering a vinyl experience that feels both vintage and immediate. The LP is graded VG+, indicating it’s an everyday player with minor surface marks unlikely to distract from the music—a practical choice for listeners who want to enjoy Flack’s debut without fuss. It’s the kind of record that fits neatly alongside Donny Hathaway’s work, a reminder that some voices are best heard spinning on vinyl, where the grooves hold just enough conversation to keep you leaning in.
