Todd Rundgren- Runt-LP

• Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Misprint
• Label: Ampex Records
• Catalog number: A-10105
• Country: US

Runt captures Todd Rundgren’s early solo ambitions, blending melodic rock with hints of pop and power balladry that fans of Harry Nilsson or Carole King might appreciate. The album’s mix of catchy tunes like “We Gotta Get You A Woman” and the multi-part suite “Let's Swing / The Last Thing You Said / Don't Tie My Hands” offers a snapshot of Rundgren’s songwriting before his work with Utopia. Given his connections to bands like Nazz and the stylistic nods toward groups such as Big Star and Raspberries, this record sits comfortably among early ‘70s singer-songwriter rock explorations that balance introspective lyrics with punchy arrangements. It’s an album that’s not quite in anyone’s backyard, but close enough to invite a curious listen. This 1970 pressing on vinyl brings that moment to life with a straightforward presentation, avoiding the distractions of later reissues. The VG+ condition suggests a record that’s been played but well cared for, with only minor marks and scuffs unlikely to interfere with the music’s flow. If you’re hunting for an early Rundgren statement that leans into his melodic strengths and layered songwriting, this LP fits neatly on the shelf just beside your Randy Newman and Utopia records—proof that sometimes the solo act is just a band waiting to happen.
