Songs By Tom Lehrer marks the debut of one of musical satire’s sharpest voices, originally released in 1953 on a modest 10-inch LP. Lehrer's witty, acerbic observations unfold over an intimate acoustic setup, blending clever lyricism with a small ensemble’s straightforward sound. Tracks like "The Old Dope Peddler" and "Fight Fiercely Harvard" showcase his knack for twisting humor and intellect into songs that invite more than casual listening. It's no surprise this collection found a place in the National Recording Registry, reflecting its lasting cultural imprint beyond mere novelty. This Winchester reissue offers a chance to enjoy Lehrer's pioneering work on vinyl, with a condition graded VG, indicating some surface wear and potential background noise but remaining fully playable. The format and pressing details here provide a practical way to experience the album’s original charm without fussing over collector minutiae. After all, Tom Lehrer’s humor is best served without static—though a little scratchiness might underscore the era’s own imperfections as much as the record’s.
