Arnold Walter "Buck" Ryan (1925–1982) was a master of the bluegrass fiddle, celebrated for a career that spanned nearly four decades of high-profile performances and championship victories. A native of Mt. Jackson, Virginia, Ryan began playing at age nine and turned professional by fourteen, eventually becoming a staple on national television as a member of Jimmy Dean’s Texas Wildcats during the late 1950s. His technical brilliance was matched by a legendary "ear" for music; despite never learning to read a single note, he won multiple world fiddling championships at prestigious competitions in Warrenton and Berryville, Virginia, between 1952 and 1968. Throughout the 1960s and 70s, Ryan became a cornerstone of the bluegrass circuit, most notably through his long-term collaboration with Don Reno and Bill Harrell and the Virginians. His versatile style allowed him to transition seamlessly from the frantic, high-speed energy of "Orange Blossom Special"—a signature show-stopper—to melodic, soulful waltzes. Beyond the festival stage, Ryan’s reputation earned him invitations to perform for several U.S. Presidents and at the United Nations, solidifying his legacy as one of the most respected instrumentalists in Appalachian music history before his induction into the Virginia Country Music Hall of Fame in 1982.
