John Kay is best known as the founding member of Steppenwolf, a rock band that emerged in Los Angeles in 1967. Alongside Goldy McJohn and Jerry Edmonton, who were all previously part of the Sparrows, Kay helped create a sound that resonated with audiences worldwide. Steppenwolf achieved remarkable commercial success, selling over 25 million records and earning seven gold albums and one platinum album. The band's legacy includes iconic tracks such as "Born to Be Wild," "Magic Carpet Ride," and "Rock Me," with a total of 13 singles reaching the Billboard Hot 100. Active initially from 1968 to 1972, Steppenwolf saw a reunion from 1974 to 1976, with Kay as the sole original member continuing the band's legacy until 2018 under the name John Kay & Steppenwolf. Notably, in 2016, the band received a nomination for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and their classic hit "Born to Be Wild" was honored in 2018 by being included in the Hall of Fame's inaugural singles category.
