Carmen McRae's 1966 album Alfie captures her nuanced vocal artistry amidst intimate, acoustic small-group arrangements crafted by Don Sebesky and Peter Matz. The record stands out for its thoughtful interpretations of contemporary songwriting, including the title track "Alfie" by Burt Bacharach and Hal David and a distinctive cover of Lennon and McCartney's "And I Love Him." These selections highlight McRae's ability to bridge jazz tradition with popular material, making the album a compelling listen for anyone drawn to focused, sophisticated vocal jazz. If you appreciate the subtle phrasing of Ethel Ennis or the smooth storytelling of Adam Wade, this album offers a similarly engrossing experience. This pressing from 1966 presents Alfie on vinyl with a VG+ grade, indicating it has been gently used but remains perfectly suited for regular listening without distracting surface noise. The audio quality holds up well for a record of its era, and the straightforward 12-inch format makes it an accessible addition to your collection. While light marks and paper scuffs might be visible, they do not interfere with the music’s clarity. It’s the kind of record that lets Carmen’s voice take center stage—no need to shout over any vinyl chatter.
