The musical’s nods from the Tony Awards, including a nomination for Best Book and a nod to Avon Long’s performance, highlight its cultural footprint beyond the stage. This 1972 double LP pressing from Stax Records holds a sturdy presence with vinyl graded VG, indicating noticeable surface wear and some background noise but remaining fully playable. For those drawn to theatrical soundtracks that favor storytelling over spectacle, this edition offers a chance to explore Van Peebles’ unique voice in a format that reminds you why soundtracks are more than just musical footnotes—they’re the story’s heartbeat. It’s the kind of record that might ask you to pause and listen closely, rather than just play in the background. Melvin Van Peebles. Don't Play Us Cheap (Original Cast & Soundtrack Album).
