Stevie Wonder’s Fulfillingness’ First Finale offers a nuanced blend of soulful introspection and inventive grooves, standing as a thoughtful chapter in his early-’70s output. Tracks like “Boogie On Reggae Woman” and “You Haven’t Done Nothin” showcase his knack for combining socially aware lyrics with compelling rhythms, all framed by his own arrangements. The involvement of engineers Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margouleff helped shape the album’s distinct sonic texture, while contributions from percussionists Bobbye Hall and Rocky add subtle depth. The presence of The Persuasions and Lani Groves adds extra vocal layers, enriching the album’s acoustic ensemble feel without overwhelming the intimate moments. This 1974 pressing presents the album in its original vinyl format, ideal for those who appreciate the tactile experience of a record spinning at 33 1/3 RPM. It carries a VG+ rating, meaning it’s a reliable player with only minor surface marks that shouldn’t interfere with the music’s clarity. For anyone interested in focused listening that balances lyricism and musicianship, this pressing offers a solid window into Stevie Wonder’s artistry during a creatively rich period. If your collection needs a record that’s as thoughtful as it is rhythmically engaging, Fulfillingness’ First Finale holds its own without trying too hard to steal the spotlight.
