George Coleman, an influential American jazz saxophonist, was born on March 8, 1935. He first picked up the alto saxophone in his teenage years but later transitioned to tenor saxophone while collaborating with B.B. King in 1953. Coleman's significant contributions to jazz are highlighted by his time with Miles Davis' quintet from 1963 to 1964, during which he recorded classic albums such as "Seven Steps to Heaven" and "My Funny Valentine." His impressive talent earned him the title of NEA Jazz Master in 2015. Throughout his career, Coleman has been recognized for his ability to blend various jazz styles, leaving a lasting impact on the genre. He is also known for other notable tracks like "Freddie Freeloader" and "All Blues." As of October 2024, he remains active in the music scene, continuing to perform and record new material.
