The New Lost City Ramblers

Old-time musicFolk music
The New Lost City Ramblers emerged from New York City in 1958, founded by Mike Seeger, John Cohen, and Tom Paley. They dedicated themselves to reviving traditional playing styles derived from old 78rpm records of the 1920s and 1930s, striving for an authentic sound that honored the roots of southern music rather than sanitizing it. In 1962, Tracy Schwarz joined the band, taking over for Tom Paley. Throughout their career, they produced notable songs like "Keep Moving," "Taxes on the Farmer Feeds Us All," and "Boomer's Story." Their influential recordings for the Folkways label eventually became part of the Smithsonian Institution's collection. The group's dynamic gradually faded in the latter half of the 1960s, but John Cohen's impact resonated beyond their music, inspiring the character in the Grateful Dead's classic "Uncle John's Band."
