The Crusaders’ The 2nd Crusade from 1973 offers a rich blend of jazz-funk and soul-jazz that stands out with its tight, thoughtful arrangements and distinctive marimba work by Wilton Felder. Produced by Stewart Levine and engineered by Rick Pekkonen, this album carries the subtle yet effective effects from "Stix" Hooper, giving the sound an engaging depth without overwhelming the acoustic core. Tracks like "Don't Let It Get You Down" and "Journey From Within" reveal the group’s knack for balancing groove and melody, making it a rewarding listen for those who appreciate focused instrumental interplay. The cover art by Barry Feinstein and Vicki Hodgetts complements the music’s cool, understated vibe—proof that the Crusaders weren’t just crusading in the studio. This 1973 pressing on Blue Thumb Records comes with vinyl in very clean condition, showing only minor, light surface marks that won’t interfere with play. The record’s glossy finish suggests careful handling over the years, so it’s a solid choice for collectors who want a reliable copy of this particular Crusaders set. Owning this LP is a bit like joining a second crusade yourself—an invitation to revisit a classic era of jazz-funk with all the right players in place.
