Notable compositions such as "St. Thomas," "Oleo," "Doxy," and "Airegin" have solidified his status as a key figure in jazz, with "St. Thomas" becoming one of his most recognized pieces. Rollins has been acknowledged for his innovative approach to music, particularly his pioneering use of bass and drums without piano as accompaniment for his saxophone solos. Often hailed as "the greatest living improviser," he has not performed publicly since 2012 and announced his retirement in 2014. His album "Saxophone Colossus" remains a landmark release in jazz history, further illustrating his contributions to the art form.
