Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells made a remarkable entrance in 1973 as the first album issued by Virgin Records, helping put the label on the map. Built as a mostly instrumental long-form suite, it introduced Oldfield as a multi-instrumentalist with a distinctly progressive rock approach. Its opening theme also gained major cultural reach through The Exorcist, giving the album a presence well beyond the usual prog audience.
